When Crime Stoppers of Houston and SeePoint Technology get tough on crime, Houstonians benefit.
Houston, Texas Sunday, August 02, 2009 HOUSTON FUGITIVES FIND THAT THERE IS
NOWHERE TO RUN AND NOWHERE TO HIDE
Crime Stoppers of Houston is expanding their organization¡¦s multimedia reach. By taking the known clues and information about criminal fugitives to where area citizens gather in masse, and making the information easy to access and interactive via a fast, dependable kiosk by SeePoint Technology, Crime Stoppers is poised to help local authorities reign in suspected murderers, rapists, and other wanted felons.
Utilizing SeePoint Technology¡¦s VantagePoint Light kiosk¡¦s bright, 17¡¨ internet-ready touch screen displays, shoppers in high-traffic areas at Houston¡¦s Greenspoint Mall can view the faces and read descriptions of criminals that are wanted in their area. The kiosk links to the Crime Stoppers website, and from there anyone who might recognize a fugitive in their midst can place an anonymous report to the Crime Stoppers hotline.
The effect of having an anonymous channel for reporting felony crime is truly empowering to a citizenry ¡V since their inception in 1983, Crime Stoppers of Houston will have helped local law enforcement arrest over 21,000 felony suspects and solve over 28,000 criminal cases. Using information directly reported through the Crime Stoppers program, Houston-area law enforcement averages almost 1,000 such collars a year, making a major difference in the fight against crime in Houston.
¡§We see the kiosk as a unique, innovative, and interesting educational tool to give citizens in the ongoing fight against crime in our neighborhood,¡¨ says Crime Stoppers Communications Manager Ray Wathen. ¡§Equally important to us was the affordability of SeePoint products and their customer service. (SeePoint) turned around our request in a short period of time and were very responsive to our needs,¡¨ adds Wathen.
SeePoint¡¦s Jeff Goldstein says that the Redondo Beach, California-based kiosk company is proud to be associated with such a vital community organization. ¡§If together we take even one criminal off the streets, then this kiosk was a major success,¡¨ he says. ¡§Our platform is designed so that the content of a group like Crime Stoppers is presented in a way that people passing by will instinctively want to interact with the kiosk. The screen is bright and crisp, and the Vantage Point Light model is built with a snappy looking, ruggedized steel frame that takes up a very small footprint. It¡¦s perfect for installations like malls and other high traffic areas where you want to catch peoples attention with high visibility, but where you also need a machine that is reliable, vandal resistant and self-contained.¡¨
The Greeenspoint Mall kiosk is a pilot program. Wathen says that if it produces the expected results in terms of community awareness and anonymous reportage of suspected criminals, Crime Stoppers of Houston will seek to expand their kiosk program to other public locations, such as other malls and transit centers.
As criminals in Houston are quickly learning, with Crime Stoppers broadcasting their images and information in popular public areas on the SeePoint kiosks, there really is nowhere to run to, and nowhere to hide.
